LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- A militiaman stabbed his Army detachment commander in Conner town, Apayao Wednesday, police said.
The Conner police reported receiving a mobile phone call from Sergeant Hermogenes Yanba Melandres Jr., commander of the 77th Infantry Battalion’s CAA (Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit-Active Auxiliary) detachment in Barangay Calafug, reporting that he had been stabbed by Cafgu member Marlon Gungob Gundan, 39.
Melandres told police a number of militiamen were drinking inside the detachment when Gundan challenged him to a fight around 3:30 p.m. When the detachment commander tried to pacify the militiaman, an argument and a tussle ensured during which the soldier was stabbed in the thigh, police officer Greg Ammiyao said.
However, Melandres did not explain why the militiamen were drinking inside the military outpost and if this was allowed.
Responding policemen arrested Gundran and took Melandres to the Conner District Hospital for treatment, Superintendent Cherry M. Fajardo said.
